18th of Elient - Journey to see Nimbus

As Seraph and Rohavic collect their gear in the bright early morning hours, Brannic walks up beside them and sets his dusty pack on the ground.

"Sounds like it's just the three of us on this one. Vig was mumbling about needing more time to work on some armor and weapons and Jode is busy with his new baby Griffon."

Brannic tips his hat up and scratches his head.

"I'm not sure what Jellen is up to. He seems to have disappeared these past couple of days."

With little fanfare, the trio left the outskirts of Grey's Deep and followed the road towards the ruins in the forest to the West.

The sun was out but a bitter chill was on the air. The fall weather appeared to be coming to the valley a little early this morning. A light frost could be seen on the grass and rocks just outside of town.

After travelling for the better part of a day, the group came to the edge of the forest, near the location of the ruins.

Brannic led the way as Rohavic guarded Seraph as the 3 men entered the woods.

The forest was alive with sounds and smells. Quite unlike the last time they visited Birchnor. Small birds could be seen flittering by in the distance. Small beams of light penetrated the canopy of leaves and branches above to cast long shadows all across the forest floor.

After several more hours, Brannic and Seraph saw the familiar outline of a crumbled tower through the trunks of the trees. As the men slowly walked around the backside of the tower, they were greeted by a grisly sight.

The severed heads of several creatures were planted on wooden stakes about 20 feet from the makeshift entrance of the structure. Most of the heads appear to be that of Gnolls with several Orc and Bugbears included.

As the group looked at the sight, Rohavic feels the presence of sharp cold metal pressed against his ear.

As the men turn around they see Nimbus, seeming to appear out of nowhere, with his rapiers drawn on Rohavic.

"I know who you two are," Nimbus says as he gestures to Seraph and Brannic, " but I don't know who you are."

::: Seraph bows before Nimbus. :::

"Greetings Nimbus."

::: Then motioning toward Rohavic. :::

"This is Rohavic, a wood elf and Ranger from the High Forest. He has been with us for several days fighting by our sides. He has proven himself many times over as a worthy protector of Grey’s Deep and a friend.

“It was my intention to introduce him to you, Nimbus, so that you may perhaps enlighten his combat abilities as you did for many of my fellow companions. I was also hoping that you might instruct me in the ancient language of Netherese. During our recent struggles there have been more and more references to your long dead society. Particularly, there have been references to this staff I now hold in my hand, an heirloom, apparently of your former master.

“And if there is anything that we can do to repay this favor, please just ask.”

With a quick flick of his wrist, Nimbus retracts his rapier and sheathes it somewhere in his arm.

"Seraph, until I know more of Rohavic, I shall take your word about him."

He walks over to the entrance and sits on a piles of rocks. He motions the rest to have a seat.

"The staff you carry was used by one of my Master's apprentices. I believe Tavspur was his name."

He pauses a moment and looks at the ruins all around.

"I have a proposition for you. As you can see, the repair to the ruins has proceeded much slower than I had anticipated. I do not posses the proper knowledge of building to effect the needed repairs. If you can provide me with books which will tell me how to fix these ruins, I will teach you what I remember of the old Netherese."

::: Seraph finally realizing the destroyed creatures lifts his head with an inquisitive look. :::

"Nimbus, I have many books and such that you would find useful. In fact, I would be glad to offer my knowledge if you are willing when I return.

"By the way, what happened to the all the beasties? Your handy work or something else?"

Nimbus points to the heads circling the entrance to the ruins, "Those foul creatures don't know when to stay away. I figured this should be a warning even they can understand."

He points to a large mound of dirt over in the forest.

"I buried the bodies over there along with all the gear. The last time one of them wandered too close was about a TenDay ago."

::: Seraph suddenly becomes concerned. :::

"Where did you say the buried bodies were Nimbus? We don't want the undead to surface. Lathander only knows what Kritchnor is capable of. Unfortunately, I do not have the equipment or the fortitude to perform the rituals necessary to prevent the dead from rising. On a small scale yes, but the amount of humanoids you dispatched overwhelms my abilities for now."

::: Seraph contemplates momentarily. :::

"When we return with the books you seek, I will bring the tools and scrolls needed to sanctify the dead lying there.

"Nimbus, I would be wary of the area where the dead lie. Even the dead without heads can rise as undead."

::: Seraph looks at his companions. :::

"Perhaps we should return to Grey's Deep and seek out the tomes that Nimbus needs. I will also need to prepare scrolls and holy water to perform the ritual of blessings on the dead here. What do you think?"
