1st of Marpenoth - Dinner with the Council

After a joyous day of celebration, the townsfolk of Grey's Deep went back to work today.

Farmers finished harvesting the crops left in the field and prepared their stocks for winter. Local craftsmen and merchants purchased supplies from a passing merchant caravan to replenish their stocks. Regular townsfolk went back to their regular routine.

During the morning, messengers sent from the mayor searched out each of the Regulators in town. The Regulators were presented with a invitation which reads as follows:

Greetings Regulator,

In an effort to foster better communication and co-operation between the Town Council, the Town Guard and the Regulators, I would like to invite you to dinner this evening at the town hall.

If all goes well, I would like to make this a regular weekly meeting whereby we can share thoughts and ideas of things going on in our fair valley and how to best protect ourselves.

Dinner will be served promptly at sunset.

Warmest regards,

Mayor Baugh

Upon accepting the messenger's invitation, Rohavic quickly sets out in order to complete his daily routine of circumnavigating the town.

"If only this can be a quiet day with few signs of vagabonds and other ilk... I'll need to find the rest of the group before this gathering", he thinks to himself.

Brannic comes across Rohavic near the town square as he is delivering some butchered meat to a villager.

"Hey Rohavic, how's it going today? I figured you'd still be out in the woods with Seraph talking with Nimbus."

::Jellen greets the messengers and speaks:::
"Ah yes, dinner sounds like a great idea. I think there is much we, the regulators can discuss and learn from the council and town guard at this dinner meeting. Please tell the Mayor we accept. Though I am not sure as to who is in town these days as I haven't seen Seraph lately. I thought I heard Rohavic went with him to visit Nimbus, but I keep hearing Rohavic's voice in my head, maybe it is just me."

Later than evening, the Regulators arrive at the town hall.

One of the city guards politely escorts them inside to the dining hall.

Several large tables have been moved to form a half-circle in the center of the room. Already seated in the room are Mayor Baugh and Council members, Cassandra Boliard, Olgrim Iskara, Horace Leighton, Jacob Rednald, and Chrys Zueg.

Several members of the City Guard are also in attendance. The new town Sheriff, Thomas Enoman and 3 of his deputies Tine Angther, Rothlas Kakal and Lerine Tanhin are standing near a table of drinks deep in discussion. The sheriff notes the Regulators entrance and raises his glass to them with a warm smile. The other deputies turn around and do the same.

Also in attendance are the high priests of the town. Abbot Toler is chatting with Chaver Aleoc the towns high priest to Shandukul near the entrance to the kitchen.

Suddenly, the kitchen door swings open and several halflings and human servants enter carrying plates of food and begin serving those seated.

Mayor Baugh gets up from his chair and says in a loud voice, "Welcome everyone. Please be seated. I am glad you all could come. I know there will be much to discuss this evening, however, I would ask that we first enjoy this wonderful meal the kitchen staff has prepared for us. After the meal we can discuss business matters."

The Mayor looks to Priests Toler and Aleoc. First Toler stands and says a blessing before the meal, followed by Aleoc who also offers words of comfort.

After this, the Mayor sits back down and begins eating.

::: Jellen stands and speaks to those seated at the dinner table ::::

"It's been several weeks since my last meal. And I must say this meal is quite exquisite Mayor. My thanks go out to you and the council and guard staff for this invitation you have granted to the Regulators. We are quite fortunate to have the town's support and thanks for our efforts over the last months."

::: Jellen then raises his wine glass, and clears his throat :::

"I would like to offer a toast to the mayor, the town council, guardsmen, local churches and especially to the followers of Lathandar. We thank you for this dinner of hospitality. The Morning Lord has truely blessed us all with this gracious dinner and its company... Cheers and thanks!"

::: Jellen takes a sip of his wine and sits back down to finish his dinner, patiently waiting to discuss further matters with the mayor, other staff :::

A rousing cheer of echoes throughout the hall after Jellen makes his remarks.

The rest of the meal passes by silently as people have their fill of the delicious food and wine.

Once the plates have been cleared by the kitchen staff, the Mayor stands, scratches his now full belly and says, "Well now, that was a fine meal. My thanks to the staff, you all did an excellent job this evening."

Mayor Baugh pulls some parchment out from under the table and spreads the pages out across the table top.

"Now, let's get down to business, shall we?"

As the Mayor ruffles through his papers, the Sheriff clears his throat.

"If I may, Mayor Baugh. With all that has happened since the Festival of Trees several months ago, I've had a number of people come to me and ask if they can join the town guard full time to help patrol the fence line and protect the town. Unfortunately the budget doesn't allow me to take these folks up on the offer. If we can somehow find a way to get an extra 50 GP a month into the budget I can hire up 10 more people and begin training them right away."

The Council members all look to each other and nod at the request.

Mayor Baugh picks up one of the pieces of parchment and looks it over.

"Hmm... I think that there's room in the budget for that. Is there anything else you need?"

The Sheriff looks a bit surprised by the quick answer and quickly stammers, "No sir. That should do just fine."

Chaver Aleoc, clear his throat.

"There are still some buildings which are in need of repair from the stone rain. Tragidor wasn't able to obtain all the necessary supplies his last time through. I have a contact who works within Llorkh who can get these supplies to us."

At the mention of Llorkh most people in the room act as if a bad smell has filtered in.

"Aleoc, how much would this cost us?" Councilwoman Boliard asks.

"Not much. The supplies are specialty tools and would cost no more than 20 GP."

The Mayor again refers to the same piece of paper and smiles at the Cleric, "Aleoc, tell your merchant friend that we will take him up on his bargain. A small price to pay to help out those in need. Now does anyone else have anything they'd like to bring up?"

The Mayor slowly scans the room to see if anyone has more to say.

"Those are all excellent suggestions Vig," the Mayor says. All the Council members nod in agreement at the sound proposals.

Mayor Baugh turns to speak to Councilwoman Zueg, "Can you look at procuring secure locations in town for where we can stock up on food stores?"

shuffling through more papers, "Olgrim, see if you can't come up with a supply list and pricing. We should be able to get word to Tragidor so he can load up on his next several runs through. According to the budget here, we've got several hundred pieces of gold we can use for this effort."

"Vig, I think it is an excellent idea to form an official alliance with the Dwarves in the mountains. The town council and I will need some time to determine what we can offer each other in such an arrangement."

Meanwhile, Seraph and Rohavic find themselves seated in a dark and musty corner of the ruins.

Several candles are burning in broken scones on the walls, offering dim lighting for the area.

Nimbus walks in carrying several more scrolls and lays them out on the floor in front of the seated Seraph and Rohavic.

"For the past Tenday I have told you all I can remember of the golden age of the Netheriese."

Nimbus points to the scrolls at his feet, "At this point, these scrolls are all that remain of the notes my Master. I found them in the debris which was once his study. His powerful magic has kept them in excellent condition over the long years. They will prove an instrumental guide to teach you both to read and write the old language."

He unrolls one of the scrolls and begins showning you the letters and words on the ancient vellum.

"Ha ha ha, Jode you make good jokes....but yes, I do plan on fasting until next weeks dinner. It is quite a challenge at times but it does help purify my mind and spirit. Maybe you should give it a try too?"

::: Jellen notices Jode does not give much attnetion to his suggestion and then motions to the Mayor, thinking of the words he is about to speak :::

"Excuse me Mayor Baugh and Sheriff Thomas Enoman, should we consider sending out a daily and nightly perimeter patrol of the town? This way Grey's Deep may be alerted prior to the town being attacked by outsiders in the future? I suspect there will be more attacks coming for the town based on what we have come to know so far."

"Jellen, we currently have 2 man patrols which walk the fence line throughout the day. Sheriff Enoman has only 7 guards and 3 deputies, so the duties are split among them."

The Mayor looks at Jode, "as for your quiet question about pay, it is a legitimate one. Until recently the town has not had much additional money to spend on security. However, with the work the Regulators are doing along with other items, more money is finding its way into the town's coffers."

He pauses a moment and looks to the Council members and they seem to understand his thoughts.

Councilman Iskara stands and says, "It is only fitting the Regulators draw the same pay as the town guard. The town guard protects those of us who dwell inside the fence, while the Regulators take care of those threats outside."

The rest of the Council nods in agreement. The Mayor jots some notes down on one of the papers in front of him.

GAMING NOTE: The pay amount is not very much. However, it will basically cover Time Unit upkeep from adventure to adventure. From this point forward, you no longer need to pay for upkeep.
