2nd of Eleasis - Inside the Dwarven Mines
With the return of their trade goods and the elimination of the bandits on the mountains, the Dwarves of the mines, located near the town of Grey's Deep have graciously hosted the Regulators for the past several days in their home. The Regulators have been treated to tours of the mining operation during the day and filled their evenings with good food and fun stories.
The leader of this small band of dwarves is named Meriti Goblinender. On the evening of the 2nd of Eleasis he and the rest of his crew were relaxing with the Regulators in one of the common areas setup as a makeshift dining hall.
All of a sudden, a dirty and bedraggled dwarf named Torthul Duerduk quickly stides into the room and whispers something in Meriti's ear. A sour expression passes over Meriti's face and he nods in acknowledgement to Torthul.
Meriti turns to the rest of the dwarves and Regulators in the room and says, "Torthul here tells me that Tindin and Stonechuck failed to report in as they were supposed to this evening."
The rest of the dwarves in the room seem disturbed by this news. Many are heard grumbling about the lower shafts and the 'critters' down there.
Meriti raises his hand to quiet the crowd down. "We've already lost 4 good men down there and I'd hate to lose more. However, the veins we've found in these hills are nearly tapped out. In order to keep going, we'll need to explore where we can to find more ore. Otherwise we'll need to pack up and head to another territory."
Meriti let's his words sink in a bit before turning to look at the Regulators and continuing. "Recently we've sent a group of scouts to survey some of the newest tunnels in the lowest reaches that were recently uncovered while expanding one of our mine shafts. The original survey team that was sent never returned. The day before you arrived here, I sent another pair of surveyors down the same tunnels to see if the original team could be found. It would seem that these dwarves have also gone missing."
Meriti pauses a moment before continuing. He seems unsure about himself as he begins speaking.
"I know you are our guests here and I feel badly for imposing, but this sort of thing seems like it is more suited to folks of your talents than simple miners and craftsmen. If you and your crew would be kind enough to perform a search for our missing friends in the lower tunnels, you would have our gratitude."
The other dwarves in the room immediately begin yelling and hollering. Many feel that they should all storm down there and get to the bottom of this.
Meriti holds up his hands and says in a harsh voice - "How many of you have seen combat in these tunnels? Only the oldest of us here remember the battles we fought against the Goblins in our homeland. No one here knows what's down there. If we all go stomping down there we are likely to get ourselves killed. These folk here are seasoned warriors. They just took down a Hill Giant and his Ogre minions. That's more than I think we are capable of."
The crowd of dwarves settles down a bit. Many are muttering under their breath in begrudging acknowledgement of Meriti's words.
Meriti turns back to the Regulators and says, "I know this is really none of your concerns, but we ALL would greatly appreciate any help you could offer us. What say you?"
